Shalom Community Development Projects … building futures … empowering a community

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams  …. Eleanor Roosevelt

Shalom originally started as the dream of Ps. B.A Daniel and his family, who have been helping orphans and widows in the Madurai area since the 1980’s.  They purchased the 5 acres of land at Erampatti in 2007 with the hope that one day they’d be able to build a home there where they could look after some orphans, grow food and raise some animals.

In  June 2008, they took in 12 orphan boys from nearby village and slum areas and cared for them in Madurai until Shalom Children’s Home was opened in June 2009.  Daniel’s son Israel now manages the project, working in partnership with Open Door Social Ministries India, and is supported by a team of local Indian staff and volunteers.

The project has been well supported by village leaders, staff of the school, neighbouring farmers, local tradesmen, consultants and business owners.  Special thanks also go to Berlin and Glory from the Russ Foundation in Madurai for their assistance with planning for the care of girls and organising and running our Medical Camps in Erampatti.
