Goats For The Poor

Shalom Community Development Projects  …  building futures  …  empowering a community

Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement.  Nothing can be done without hope and confidence …. Helen Keller

Since 2010, Shalom has helped 40 families through our village goat rearing groups. Our 4th goat group was started in Erampatti in 2012 when pairs of goats were given to 10 families with children attending the village tutoring program.

Goat breeding is an easy way for widows, the elderly, disabled and unemployed to supplement family income.  Extra income means more money to spend on food education and medical care.  Goat meat and milk are also good sources of protein, something that is lacking in the diet of many poor families.

Compared to cows, goats require very little space and can be fed cheaply using vegetation gathered around the village area, this makes them an ideal animal for those who don’t have their own land.
